Placement: Leg
Comments:
This pin up girl tattoo by Travis Litke is very unique. Done while Travis was doing very "painterly" tattooing, Travis refused to use a liner needle for any of it and completed it in its entirety with a 7mag needle grouping. (an artistic endeavor Travis has since abandoned) But the client specifically requested Travis' style, so rather than try to replicate the painting or just simply make a tattoo of it, he was commissioned to stylize the piece.
The placement of the tattoo is on the outer thigh. Its nearly 15 inches tall, and took more than 25 hours to complete. It was also this clients first tattoo! Travis describes that the best part of this tattoo is that it gave him plenty of time to become close friends with the client and her husband!
Starting the piece with neumatic tattoo machines, then switching to coils (and putting the neumas on ebay) added to the time. The sessions had to be spread apart because the first use of red in the lips of the pin up girl caused the client to suffer one of the worst allergic reactions Travis had ever witnessed. Literally, less than one dip in the ink cap of red, led Travis to dispose of the entire bottle and change brands.
Despite the turbulance and obstacles took to complete the tattoo, the client was ecstatic as she watched the tattoo progress. She and her husband have since commited their skin to artwork by Travis.
A tid bit about the original pin-up artist:
Vaughan Alden Bass was an American painter of pin-up art.
Bass was a Chicago artist who started his career working for the Louis F. Dow Company in St. Paul during the mid-1930s. Bass created his own pin-ups for Brown & Bigelow, but he worked for Dow as a "paint over" artist, redoing work that other artists (notably Gil Elvgren) had done for the company.
